Brunswick County
Named after the colonial port Brunswick Town, one of the first European settlements in the Cape Fear region, Brunswick County was established in 1784 out of areas of Bladen County and New Hanover County. It is the southernmost county in the state of North Carolina and the fourth-largest in area.
With a population approaching 150,000, up from 73,143 in 2000, Brunswick County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state and the 28th fastest growing county in the country. Its county seat is Bolivia, with a population of 150, one of the lowest populated county seats in North Carolina.
The median household income is $51, 164, according to 2017 figures. Much of the economy is based on tourism, though recent job growth spurred by the 1975 opening of the Brunswick nuclear power plant just north of Southport.
Popular attractions are Bald Head Island and Oak Island. and with several beautiful beaches including Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, and Caswell Beach. The city of Southport has gained much notoriety in recent years as a filming venue.
